New dates for spring....

At last the N2 gardeners are coming out of hibernation......We'll be heading up to the East Finchley tube station bank on Sunday 4th March from about 2pm to do a bit of a clear out and plan what we're going to sow and plant in the spring. Look forward to seeing you there!

N2 Gardeners Update: Clear out and autumn colour needed at station bank!

A few of us made good progress weeding, mulching and cutting back at the East Finchley Station bank on Sunday 11th September. We still have lots more to do and we are going to try and organise another date in October. Watch this space for details...

Some kind person had strimmed all the grass and cleared away a pile of weeds - we don't know who you are but we are grateful! It's looking much better.

We are also considering whether we could aim for a regular slot of say, Sunday mornings between 11am – 1pm for whoever’s available to turn up for however long they can, so that becomes established as 'station bank time'. It's quite a nice time of day/the week to chat to passersby on their way to a Sunday stroll in Cherry Tree Wood etc. We'll send round an email and update this blog if we set that up.

We would also like to offer one or two of the raised beds to anyone who doesn’t have a garden, but wanted somewhere to grow things, perhaps helping out with some general weeding as ‘payment’. Please email n2gardeners@gmail.com if you are interested.

Finally, we could do with a bit more late autumn colour, so if anyone has a clump of michaelmas daisies and/or golden rod that needs thinning, it would be nice for the site, or anything else with late colour, please get in touch at the above email address!

A few of us met up at East Finchley tube station bank on Sunday the 15th of May for some weeding and watering duties - despite the long dry spell the plants were doing remarkably well! The next weedathon of the tube station bank is planned for Sunday June 12th at 11am. We hope to see you there!

A few of us will be gathering at the tube station bank on Sunday 15th May at 11am to get on with some weeding and general maintenance (and maybe even some planting). All welcome! More dates will be announced shortly.....

New raised vegetable beds for Station bank!

On Sunday the 6th of February about ten people came along to muck in with general weeding as well as planting some currant bushes. We also installed some raised beds with wooden edging in the veg patches (see pic). This should suppress the weeds and provide a better growing medium for whatever we plant in the Spring. It will also make it easier to manage a rotation of vegetable types. Any suggestions for getting funding for more soil would be greatly appreciated!

We'll be arranging a 'spring planting' planning meeting in the Old White Lion very soon. Watch this space.....

Winter gardening on the 6th of February!

Winter drags on so we've agreed to drag ourselves up to the Bank at East Finchley Tube Station on Sunday 6 February from about 11 am and get guerilla gardening! We'll be making some raised beds in the vegetable plots as well as some general weeding, planting some more (dormant) fruit bushes and plotting for the coming growing season. If you feel like joining in please come along. Look forward to seeing some of you there......

Autumn clear out and barbecue this Halloween

Calling all N2 guerilla gardeners! We're planning an autumn clear out of the East Finchley station bank this Halloween - harvesting the last of the produce and doing some much needed weeding. We're also planning on planting some spring bulbs. After a couple of hours of graft we hope to fire up the barbecue and serve up some roasted squashes (and maybe even some sausages!).

Please join us on Sunday 31st October at 1pm outside East Finchley tube station bank. Please bring your own gloves, trowels and nibbles (if you like). Witches and wizards welcome!

Harvesting produce at East Finchley station bank....

The N2 gardeners had a very productive evening at the station bank last Sunday 1st August, joined by 5 new recruits. We harvested lots of produce and managed a good lot of weeding and watering too. After all that thristy work some of us went to the pub!

We're planning another gardening get together in September - watch this space for further details......

A little help from the girl guides....

Have you noticed how good the East Finchley tube station bank is looking? Thanks very much indeed to the 11 girl guides and their leaders who helped us out on Thursday evening (July 1st)! Much weeding and watering was achieved - three trips of the trolly with the equivalent of 8 watering can each time! They were an inspiration for the rest of us. Only draw back of the evening was the presence of some persistent (and as yet unidentified) biting insects - we hope everyone has recovered! We are trying to work out what these insects were....

Festival success!

We had a great day on our stall at the East Finchley festival on the 20th June. Lots of people came over to chat and find out what we are about. It even became warm and sunny by the end of the afternoon. Thanks to everyone who donated money, plants and seeds! We have already put some of the new plants in the East Finchley tube station bank and plan to buy more soon.

Thanks especially to those of you who signed up to join us. We're making plans for future activities - watch this space!

Tube station bank - update!

Tuesday 11th May turned out to be a good energetic day of digging and planting, with a rolling group of about 10 of us sharing the work and the fun of it. Digging on such a slope is challenging though - this participant could hardly walk the next day! We now have a water-storage butt installed at the top of the site, and lots of mixed planting of ornamental and edible things, most of which will hopefully grow despite the limited sun on this north-facing site.

We'll be back at East Finchley tube station bank on Tuesday 11th May from about 10 am. We'll be joined by about 8-10 volunteer firefighters so we should get lots of digging done! We'll also be doing some planting. Please feel free to drop by and say hello.

Progress at East Finchley tube station bank

On Saturday 17th April a few of us spent a good few hours digging and planting part of the bank of land next to the tube station. It was a lovely sunny day and we made good progress, digging in topsoil and compost, and planting a mixture of fruiting and flowering shrubs, perennials, vegetables and summer bedding - but there is still much to do....!

We are really grateful to all the East Finchley tube station staff for their enthusiastic support (especially the cups of tea!) and for use of station facilities.
